Dietary guidelines for healthy eating habits and nutrition have been available for many years through the USDA Food Pyramid. However, as demonstrated by the increasing number of overweight/obese individuals both in the United States and in many other countries in the world, these approaches seem to appear unsuccessful. In addition, while these approaches are considered preventive, they are usually not being implemented to treat diseases. For many diseases, the use of pharmaceuticals often remains the only treatment considered, ignoring the fact that the combination of certain drugs with certain foods may improve, or even decrease, the drug efficacy.
The "Nutrition, Fasting, Longevity and disease" course was developed to meet the educational expectations of physicians and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) by providing compact, topic-based research summaries on the health benefits of dietary interventions. The course will provide a detailed overview of how nutrition and fasting affect longevity and disease, and the key molecular mechanisms involved.
This Master course is a collection of research-focused video lectures for scientists, licensed physicians, and other health professionals.
It examines dietary interventions, including fasting and its clinical applications, which have been shown to induce benefits for overall longevity and for various disease states including cancer, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Non-healthcare professionals enthusiastic about the topic may also register and take the course.
After completing the course, healthcare providers will be equipped to evaluate which of the covered approaches are best suited to their own patients in practice.
The course duration is about 190 minutes
Quizzes and the final exam require 40-60 minutes
Identify dietary approaches to improve health
Allow the learner to discuss these approaches with their patients
Distinguish between dietary induced short- and long-term health benefits
Regular Price: $598
Sebastian Brandhorst PhD, has scientific training in cell biology, molecular biology, medicine, and biochemistry, all of which are highly relevant for his focus on biogerontology research to identify the mechanisms underlying cellular protection, as well as health- and lifespan-regulation, and their translation into clinical applications.
Dr. Brandhorst’s studies are focused on the role and application of short-term starvation, low calorie and/or low protein diets and fasting-mimicking diets on health and lifespan in pre-clinical to clinical studies.
Dr. Brandhorst is a Research Assistant at the Davis School of Gerontology - University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California.
Background in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, histology, flow cytometry analyses as well as a specific training in vivo study. She has conducted studies on the use of fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) and β-cell regeneration to reverse diabetes.
Kurt Hong MD, PhD is dual board-certified in internal medicine and clinical nutrition. He is specialized in a comprehensive approach to managing patients with obesity, metabolic diseases, and other nutrition-related disorders.
Dr. Hong is committed to improving outcomes for patients through clinical and translational research. Current interests include study of macro and micro-nutrients affecting energy metabolism, impact of lifestyle intervention on healthcare utilization, nutrition support for aging, and innovative use of computational phenotyping and machine learning for management of chronic diseases.
Dr. Kurt Hong (MD, PhD, FACN) is Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Executive Director of Center for Clinical Nutrition and Applied Health Research at University of Southern California.
Ladder-rank Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Yale School of Medicine and a member of the Yale Combined Program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, and the Yale Center for Research on Aging.
Students who complete each course receive a Certificate of Completion.
